Thank You for Considering the Lifesaving Act of Becoming a Foster

A foster home serves as a temporary residence for these Gentle Giants while they await placement in a forever home. Embracing the role of a foster, you will experience laughter, tears, love, and reciprocal affection. It is one of the most fulfilling roles in rescue work, where you nurture, train, cherish, and heal a wounded soul, making it whole again. Even if you doubt your impact, for your foster Dane, you create a life-changing difference.

When you foster with us, we provide:

  • Coverage for all medical expenses at our designated veterinary clinic
  • Crate (if necessary)
  • Food and Treats
  • Toys
  • Collars and leashes

The process of becoming a foster closely mirrors that of becoming an adopter, starting with an application accessible by clicking the button below.

Please be advised that a distance requirement is in place for foster homes. They are expected to be within 100 miles of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, to accommodate vet appointments.

Fostering FAQs

What if I want to adopt the Great Dane I am fostering?
If you decide to be a foster parent, it should be with the understanding that you are working toward helping a deserving Great Dane prepare for its "forever home", and not with the goal to "try out" a Great Dane you may later wish to adopt. We treat fosters and adopters equally. If you think you may wish to adopt your foster, we require a completed adoption application.
What if I go on vacation or travel for work?
Unfortunately DDS does not have facilities to temporarily house foster dogs. As a result, foster families often develop support systems to provide care in their absence. Please keep in mind that DDS must approve any temporary foster home or boarding facility.
Do I need a fenced yard?
It is preferred but not necessary. Fenced yards ensure that the dog has the safest possible environment. The dog must be exercised several times a day on a leash if you do not have a fenced yard.

What if my foster does not work out?Because of unknown history on some of the Danes we take in, sometimes things don't work out. If this turns out to be the case, you would not be stuck with the Dane. We will move the Dane to another foster within a few days of notification.

Will I become attached to my foster dog?Yes, of course!! Great Danes bond quickly and they give so much back in return for your attention. Being a foster home is extremely rewarding, but you should keep in mind that some rescue dogs may not be housebroken, may be ill, or may have had little socialization or obedience training. In spite of these challenges, our foster homes have found that when given a chance, Great Danes not only quickly improve, they flourish.
